Waseela Shakeel, a beautiful 9-year-old girl from Islamabad, Pakistan. Waseela suffers from an Insulinoma tumor and is continuously facing Hypoglycemia. Waseela has also been diagnosed with stage one Liver Cancer. She has lost her elder sister to Insulinoma recently. Waseela recently got her pancreas removed at Agha Khan Hospital. The family has invested everything they had to save their daughters but have lost one already and have been struggling to save Waseela. Unfortunately, Waseela cannot be further treated in Pakistan, as Insulinoma is a rare tumor which Pakistan lacks treatment for. Therefore, Waseela needs a medical trip to Qatar for advanced screening and treatment, which requires a lot of money. Waseela’s family can no longer afford the expenses as they have spent all they had in the past two years, treating her sister first, and now Waseela. The family needs 3 million PKR (30 Lacs) for Waseela’s treatment. This young girl should be going to school and playing with friends. Waseela should be enjoying her childhood. What is an Insulinoma Tumor?
Insulinoma is a tumor in the pancreas, a rare form of a neuroendocrine tumor. When an insulinoma tumor is present, a hormone regulation in the blood becomes abnormal. To clarify, the tumor continues to secrete a hormone that lowers the amount of sugar in the blood, even though the blood glucose level may fall to a dangerously low level, causing Hypoglycemia.
How can Insulinoma be treated?
- Surgical excision and removal of the entire tumor.
- A portion of the pancreas may have to be removed.
- Radiation therapy
- Invasive procedures
- Radiofrequency ablation of the tumor
- Selective internal radiotherapy
- Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE)
- Post-operative care is crucial until the surgical wound heals.
- Follow-up care, Screenings and check-ups are required.
What is Hypoglycemia?
Hypoglycemia, also known as low blood sugar, is when blood sugar decreases to below normal levels. This may result in weakness, trouble talking, confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures or death. In fact, Severe hypoglycemia can cause brain damage.
