Areej Shah Story:
It was in early October last year that Areej, a 4 month year old baby, was suffering from diarrhoea and vomiting. Within weeks, bacterial or viral tummy bug was formed over his back. Her parents lived in rural area, in outskirts of Karachi. After getting Areej diagnosed frim local hospitals, it was later found that she was suffering from Gastroenteritis. The doctors quoted a treatment cost of over Rs. 600,000. Areej was admitted to Agha Khan in October, but the family didn’t have sufficient funds for the treatment. Several NGOs and donors stepped up, and financed the entire treatment cost. One of my friends, Shafaq, took up this case, and she singlehandedly collected donations from social media and other circles.
The treatment took over a month. Currently, Areej is in Emergency Dept. with “Gastroenteritis” and an estimated amount of Rs. 50,000/- may be required for current admission charges.
The ledgers/patient records can only be issued to patient’s nominee, Please contact her family for that. However; there is an outstanding amount of Rs. 56,895/- still due in admissions of her previous treatment despite 60% assistance sanctioned by Patient Welfare Dept.
Gastroenteritis is a very common condition that causes diarrhoea and vomiting. It’s usually caused by a bacterial or viral tummy bug.
It affects people of all ages, but is particularly common in young children.
Most cases in children are caused by a virus called rotavirus. Cases in adults are usually caused by norovirus (the “winter vomiting bug”) or bacterial food poisoning.
It is not Areej’s mistake to be born in a poor family. This little soul shouldn’t die just because his father cannot afford to pay for his treatment.
Please donate for his surgery and let him live the life he deserves!
